Methodist Healthcare Offers Outstanding Inpatient Rehabilitation Services
Methodist Healthcare provides Inpatient Rehabilitation services at three hospitals in San Antonio: Metropolitan Methodist Hospital, Northeast Methodist Hospital and Methodist Specialty and Transplant Hospital, all campuses of Methodist Hospital. Work has begun at Methodist Texsan Hospital, a campus of Methodist Hospital, to develop 30 private rooms dedicated to inpatient rehabilitation services.
During a recent Joint Commission inspection, the surveyors described the rehabilitation units at Methodist as “impressive” and for demonstrating “best practices” for discharge planning and patient education.
Methodist Healthcare specializes in the rehabilitation and treatment of conditions such as:
- Brain injury
- Orthopedic injuries
- Neurologic conditions
- Movement disorders
- Other disabling medical conditions or injuries
Rehabilitation is all about compensating for the deficits, adapting to a new way of life and restoring function to allow the patient to return to their highest quality of life possible.
The purpose of rehabilitation is to:
- Restore the patient’s physical, sensory, and mental capabilities that were diminished or altered due to injury, illness, or disease
- Assist the patient to regain or compensate for deficits that cannot be reversed medically
- Maximize the patient’s ability to perform Activities of Daily Living (ADL’s) and functional mobility
Rehabilitation addresses the patient’s physical, cognitive, and environmental needs. It is achieved by restoring the patient’s physical functions and/or modifying the patient’s physical and social environment. The rehabilitation program is tailored to the individual patient’s needs and includes physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
Northeast Methodist Hospital has the only rehab unit in San Antonio that offers a Home Safety Assessment prior to discharge. The assessment consists of a therapist meeting the patient and a family member at their home to walk through all rooms and discuss the patient’s activities. The therapist will make suggestions for safety, furniture placement and how to accomplish various tasks performed daily prior to their injury or illness.
Patients who need help improving everyday functioning and maintaining independence can benefit from the extensive expertise of the Methodist Healthcare interdisciplinary rehab team.
